Ceramics workshop with Lorna Meaden is back on!



Ceramic artist and Art League School guest instructor Lorna Meaden fell ill last month and students were heartbroken when her workshop was canceled. But good things come to those who wait! The acclaimed potter is well once more and her class, entitled "Thrown, Altered and Decorated" is back on the school schedule. Starting May 20th, students will enjoy three intensive sessions with the Colorado artist. Meaden will be teaching her famed methods to get those creations as smooth and as beautiful as possible! This workshop addresses ways to create pots with a generous sense of volume and fluidity of line using wheel-thrown and altered porcelain. Meaden’s vocabulary of forms ranges from pots for daily use to atypical forms such as watering cans and spoons. Demonstrations include altering pots on and off the wheel, in addition to using drawn patterns to hand build spouts and handles. Surface treatment demonstrations consist of slip inlay, and glaze decoration using wax and latex. Interested artists can register here.

Meaden has a BA in art from Fort Lewis College in Colorado and an MFA in ceramics from Ohio University. She taught ceramics at San Juan College, Southern Illinois University and her alma mater, Ohio University. Her work has earned her numerous accolades, such as a Best in Show award at the 2006 Pottery National in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and three Juror's Choice Awards in various shows over the past three years.

NewCourtland Fellowship: The Center for Emerging Visual Artists - PA
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), in partnership with NewCourtland, is pleased to offer Philadelphia area artists the opportunity to participate in an exciting, community-based fellowship. Through the NewCourtland Artist Fellowship, eight artists will be selected to bring innovative and engaging art-making to seniors in sites throughout Philadelphia. In order to apply, artists are asked to develop an intergenerational project that brings New Courtland’s residents together with school age children/teens to create a meaningful experience and an high quality artistic project. Work created by residents and their school-aged partners during the 2010 Fellowship Program will be exhibited with the work of the artist fellows in a large, well publicized exhibition entitled Art is Ageless. Accepted artists will receive a fellowship award of $2,500. Once artists receive this award they will be responsible for conducting ten 1.5 hour workshops, attending several preliminary and post-workshop meetings, attending one sensitivity training session, and participating in the Art is Ageless exhibition in Spring 2011. Extremely Shorts 14 Film Festival Call for Entries - TX

Started in 1998, the Extremely Shorts Festival is a juried competition of adventurous 3-minute or shorter films and videos from around the world. The festival's format encourages innovative approaches to moviemaking in a range of genres, including narrative, art, experimental, documentary, and animation. Each year a different juror (esteemed filmmaker, film programmer, or arts curator) selects 20-25 minimasterpieces to be shown at a 2-day event in June. 36th Annual Paducah Photo 2011 Juried Photography Exhibition - KY

Originating in 1975, the Paducah Photo has grown from a fledgling contest into the region's most prestigious annual photographic event. Paducah Photo is open to all photographers working in digital and film photography, photographic book arts, and photographic alternative processes. All work submitted must be original, completed in the last three years and not previously exhibited in a Paducah Photo exhibition. The juror this year is Karen Irvine, curator of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Colubia College, Chicago. She has organized numerous one-person and thematic group exhibitions and is a part-time instructor of photography at Columbia College, Chicago. She recieved her MFA in photography from FAMU, Prague, and a Masters of Arts degree in art history at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Portland Public Art Committee (PPAC), which administers the Portland, Maine Public Art Program, invites the submission of qualifications for the design and fabrication of public seating to be installed at selected locations along the new Bayside Trail in Portland's Bayside neighborhoods. The public seating should contribute to the distinct identity of the Bayside Trail and engage the public in discovering site-specific piece(s) of high-quality functional art. Artist Installations at Eastern State Penitentiary - PA

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is currently accepting proposals for its 2012 season of site-specific artist installations. Maximum funding is $7,500 per project. The deadline for proposals is June 16, 2011. Note: This is not a deadline for a postmark, but for delivery at the historic site. There is a 24-hour grace period for all applications. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world' s first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America's most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone's Cell, and Death Row. A critically-acclaimed series of artist installations is free with admission. The Color of Music- A Nationwide call for artists - RI

Royal Gallery in Providence RI, is calling on artists Nationwide that will like to submit work for a show later this year. Royal Gallery is known for representing artists with a background of classical realism technique with a contemporary subject matter. We would like artist to submit one piece of artwork that best represents (to their interpretation) the joy of music. Whether it is a: representation of a concert, an instrument, dancing, etc. Must be your own original design, completed independently, and must NOT have been exhibited previously and must be available for purchase. Acceptable mediums include oil, acrylic, pastel, and all drawing media. Photography, computer generated artwork, or collage is not eligible. Dimensions need to be with a max of 1008 sq. inches (for example: 28" x 36") should have been created within the last 12 months prior to deadline. For submission we need good quality images of artwork to be submitted (between 180-300 dpi), a resume, contact, website (if applicable) and a small portfolio sampling of artwork. SICA, The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts, is currently planning a new monthly showcase to be held on the first Friday of each month beginning in March. 24th Annual Northern National Art Competition - WI
