National Geographic Photography Contest - DC

Deadline: November 30, 2010. As a leader in capturing our world through brilliant imagery, National Geographic sets the standard for photographic excellence. Call for "Criminales Todos:" A Community Art Exhibit - ORDeadline: December 1, 2010. The Safe Communities Project and Portland Central America Solidarity Committee are calling all artists to submit pieces to be presented at the upcoming art exhibit CRIMINALES TODOS, December 10th -17th, 2010. CRIMINALES TODOS is a travelling community art exhibit aiming to inspire an ongoing dialogue and examination of the social, political and cultural issues related to the criminalization of communities of color. From post-Civil War vagrancy laws targeting newly freed African Americans in the South, to police rounding up Japanese Americans and sending them to internment camps during WWII, to SB1070 targeting Latinos in Arizona; the history of police targeting communities of color has deep roots in American history. In times of increased police surveillance, tightened border control and the implementation of anti-immigrant and racist laws across the country, we encourage artists to engage in a conversation about the devastating repercussions of policing and the militarization in our local communities. Artists of all backgrounds are invited. Our aim is to create a space for conversation against the long standing practices of repression, and the impact of unjust and discriminatory practices. Design and Fabrication of Art for the City of Roanoke’s Historic Market Building - VADeadline: December 17, 2010. The Roanoke Arts Commission seeks qualified artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install artwork to be embedded in the sidewalk at the four entryways of the historic market building in downtown Roanoke. The Arts Commission desires art work that reflects the history and spirit of the City of Roanoke and/or the historic market building.The artwork shall be made of durable materials suitable for high foot traffic and durable to outside elements and change in temperature and shall require little or no maintenance.The art will be set on a concrete sub base. Qualifications: This project is open to all artists and artist teams, age 18 and over, who are residents of the United States. A Failed Entertainment - NY
Deadline: January 10, 2011. In 1996 author David Foster Wallace published Infinite Jest, a sprawling and complex novel that chronicles the lives of the characters surrounding James Incandeza, an avant-garde filmmaker, mathematician, and visionary tennis instructor. The plot largely revolves around the missing master copy of one of Incandeza's films, the lethally entertaining Infinite Jest, a catatonic stupor inducing masterpiece. Included as a footnote in Wallace's novel is the Complete Filmography of James O. Incandeza, a detailed list of over 80 films including documentaries, infomercials, structuralist works, and feature films. A Failed Entertainment uses Incandeza's Filmography as a departure point for the creation of new works. The curators of this exhibition are currently seeking film or video submissions that attempt to realize selections from the Complete Filmography of James O. Incandeza. The 12x12 exhibition will be a juried and comprised of works that do not exceed 12" x 12" x 12" (this includes the frame for two- dimensional works, and in the case of three-dimensional works, includes the base. Deanwood Recreation Center - DC

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) seeks an artist or artist team with significant 3-dimensional experience to design, fabricate and install permanent public artwork for the new Deanwood Recreation Center, in Washington, DC. Deanwood is located in the District's Northeast quadrant and is one of the District's oldest and proudest neighborhoods. The selected artist(s) will be required to collaborate with local artist, Amber Robles-Gordon. Ms. Gordon was selected through a peer panel selection process to serve as the apprentice to the selected artist for this project. Ms. Gordon will be a valuable asset to the selected artist and serve as a liaison to the community. Ms. Gordon is a mixed media artist and the goal for her participation in this project is to collaborate on the design and fabrication of the artwork and to build her capacity as a public artist. The overarching goal of this project is to create a unique landmark that expresses the character, strength and vibrancy of the neighborhood. The artwork must be celebratory and emphasize the historic heritage of Deanwood. The permanent installation should help generate and reinforce a sense of place within the community. Tres Rios Wetlands Project - AZ
Deadline: December 3, 2010. The Phoenix Office of Cultural Affairs requests qualifications from professional artists to work with the City, community and stakeholders to significantly enhance the trail system for the Tres Rios Wetlands Project. The Tres Rios Wetlands are a key component of the Phoenix region's water system. Built at the confluence of the Salt, Gila, and Aqua Fria Rivers, the constructed wetlands use treated wastewater to create a rich riparian habitat for many species of waterfowl close to metropolitan Phoenix. The habitat has become a premier birding and habitat-watching area. The addition of trails promises to transform the site into a leading environmental and recreational site with numerous educational opportunities. The selected artist will work with an established design team to integrate public art into the trail system, enhancing public awareness about the importance of the wetlands, and encouraging appropriate use of the wetlands and their trails. The public art enhancements are intended to create a unique sense of place, but not compete with the wetlands' natural beauty or impede the functionality of the place. Working in Wonder: Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University - NJ
Deadline December 1, 2010.  Seeking submissions for “Working in Wonder,” a group exhibition.  Open to all artists working in any medium.  Exhibition dates are January 18 through February 11, 2011.   $15/5 entries. Artists are encouraged to submit artwork exploring themes inspired by cabinets of curiosities, kunstkammern and wunderkammern.  The exhibit will explore these themes in both  contemporary and historical frameworks.  “Working in Wonder” will discuss the cabinet and examine its influence on contemporary art.  The exhibition will address the co-existence of naturalia and artificialia in the cabinet and in contemporary art.  A brief overview of the history of the cabinet will precede the core of the exhibit, which will feature artists who have taken the ideas of the curiosity cabinet and applied them in a contemporary framework.

FAME:
Fame is defined as an impression, report or opinion about someone or something which is widely known.  It may be of a positive of negative nature, and impact on the standing of that individual within a society.  The United States has been described as a fame hungry culture, which has been fuelled in recent years by the plethora of communication devices, social networking internet sites which facilitate the dispersal of information in real time, and a slew of reality programming on both television and the internet.  This exhibition will focus on the work of artists who address ideas about fame and infamy, celebrity culture, current idols, imitation of celebrities, any and all attempts to secure at least 15 minutes in the spotlight. Exhibition will be on display January – March 2012. These exhibitions will be accompanied by substantial exhibition catalogues. She has organized over 60 museum exhibitions internationally including Florine Stettheimer: Manhattan Fantastica at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Additionally, she has written numerous books and has lectured and taught on international contemporary art and design. Bloemink received her B.A. in art history from Stanford University; an M.A. from the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU) and an additional M.A. and her Ph.D. from Yale University.

Deadline: January 3, 2011. Drift Station Gallery and Parallax Space are pleased to announce a call for artworks for their upcoming exhibition “Instructions for Initial Conditions”. The show will consist of instructions exhibited as artworks, either to be carried out by the audience or realized in their minds. In Chaos Theory, the initial condition refers to a simple starting point that, when the system is set into motion, is radically transformed into an unpredictable result. Works for this exhibition should describe the initial condition by which an artwork can be made or enacted. The work may use traditional or non-traditional materials, be performative or socially integrated, be text- or sound-based, be purely poetic and only to be realized mentally, or in another unforeseen form. Gender Matters/Matters of Gender: Juried Exhibition - PA
Deadline: December 1, 2010. Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide. Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions. Exhibition dates: March 23-April 20, 2011. Juror: Judith Tannenbaum, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. "Transition to Digital" at The Art League

David Applegate (Conservator, National Gallery of Art) and Jim Steele (Photographer, Torpedo Factory Resident Artist) will present "Transition to Digital" on Thursday, November 18, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Art League Gallery.

This informal talk will focus on the transition from traditional film processes to the current state-of-the-art digital processing. Both technical and esthetic issues that have happened as a result of this transition will be discussed and the speakers will show examples of the various processes photographers use today. One of the biggest hurdles artists have to wrestle with every single year is filing their taxes. Between choosing which Schedule to fill out, how many qualified deductions one can make, and deciding if ones studio practice is a bona fide business, artists make many common mistakes when reporting to Uncle Sam.

Debbie Harrison and Benjamin Takis will help clarify the different avenues artists can take when administrating the business of their art. Together, they will provide a general base of tax knowledge, and tackle more advanced topics relevant to artists

Glen Echo Park: Available Studio Space


The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture is seeking a visual artist to join the Park's Resident Artists and to lease one of our small yurt studio spaces. Located in Glen Echo Park, a National Park site, the available yurt is a unique circular studio in a high visibility area of the Park. The studio is approximately 201 square feet, and is available for a 1-2 year lease starting on January 1, 2011.

Teresa Oaxaca at the Carnegie Institution for Charity

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Teresa Oaxaca, 22, of Arlington, Virginia will show new paintings in the Rotunda of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C. in connection with the Esperanza Education Fund Benefit Concert on December 6, 2010, 7:30-9:00 PM.

The evening will begin with a performance in the ballroom by the internationally renowned Classical/Flamenco Guitarist Grigory Goryachev. After the concert there will be a champagne reception in the Rotunda where Oaxaca’s new 6-foot high paintings will be featured. This is Esperanza's second Winter Benefit.

Teresa Oaxaca is a classically trained painter who grew up in Arlington.  She studied for five years in Florence, Italy, and currently works in the Washington D.C. area as a full-time artist.  Her portfolio largely consists of figural painting and still life although she is also known as a portrait artist and has taken on numerous commissions from clients in the Washington D.C. area since 2006.  This young art prodigy has already received high recognition, including winning international awards such as the Canadian-based Elizabeth Greenshields grant twice, apprenticing with the Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum, and exhibiting internationally.  Locally, she has won “Best in Show” awards and had a solo exhibition at The Art League in Alexandria, and her work was recently selected for the “People’s Choice Award” at Artspace Herndon.  Another passion of hers is blogging. In her blog Drawing and Painting Journal, she shares her experiences and gives art instruction.  In her own words, her newest series of paintings “look like a Ringling Brothers Circus, a flower show, and a Vintage Clothing festival mashed into one…”  For more information on Oaxaca’s paintings, visit her website at www.teresaoaxaca.com

The Esperanza Education Fund, Inc. is a community-financed college scholarship program founded and operated by a diverse, all-volunteer group of young professionals in the Capital region.
