Receiving Tonight

CALL TO ARTISTS
LET THERE BE LIGHT
Juror – Cynthia Connolly
January 7, 2009 – February 2, 2009

Light can be gentle, dangerous, dreamlike, bare, living, dead, misty, clear, hot, dark, violet, springlike, falling, straight, sensual, limited, poisonous, calm and soft. - Sven Nykvist

Work a great deal with evening effects, a lamp, a candle, etc. The tantalizing thing is not always to who the source of light, but the effect of light. - Edgar Degas

Light gives art a sense of time and place. We need light to see. The more light there is, the more vibrant a work becomes. Light is critical to the weather, time of day, gives a good painting it’s meaning, gives it life and vitality. A good still life has to have light to give it a sense of reality. The more light there is the more color there is. Light makes the color vibrant. Artists should create simultaneous contrast by using complementary colors because our eye always sees the opposite. – Art League instructor Steve Fleming

Artists can be inspired by the works of Turner, Edward Hopper, Rembrandt, the Dutch Painters, and our own Art League instructors, Rob Liberace, Danni Dawson and Ted Reed. The works of all our instructors can be viewed on The Art League website at www.theartleague.org under “Classes” and “Faculty”.
